CASE STUDY ON KUNDIMAN HANGANG NOVELTY SONGS: VICTOR WOOD, APRIL BOY REGINO, ERASERHEADS, VIVA HOT BABES, SPONGE COLA AND MUSIC INDUSTRY

Victor Wood

I.Introduction

Victor "Vic" Wood (born February 1, 1946 in Buhi, Camarines Sur, Philippines) is a Filipino singer, actor and politician. His voice earned him various titles, including "Jukebox King" and "Plaka King".

Before becoming a singer, Wood starred in some productions of Sampaguita Pictures. He is a member of Iglesia Ni Cristo. He is currently hosting the show called "Beautiful Sunday" airs every sunday on Net25.

II. Positive and negative implication to philippines popular culture

Positive implication

Mannerisms because He loved the adulation and admiration of his fans and the media.

Negative implication

He is despair, Because Wood was a popular singer of the time, and recorded many albums for Victor Records. In despair is dominated by remakes of popular American songs from the 1950s and 1960s

III.Relationship of the topic to the present scenario of philippine popular culture

“Ihilak (Plaka Pilipino)"

In 1974, Philippine male singer Victor Wood released Ihilak. Eleven of the album's 12 songs are Philippine folk/love songs sung in Visayan language (the Visayas region is the central group of islands in the Philippines). The remaining song uses the melody of Neil Diamond's "Song Sung Blue," but replaces the original English lyrics with those of the Visayan dialect. The album opens with the tender "Ihilak," which moves in a slow, shuffle-like pace. Victor Wood sings "Ihilak" with depth and tenderness and puts much warmth into his voice. "Ihilak" tells of a man's despair for the loss of his love: "What is the real reason/You just forgot good memories/You left me/I did not abandon my love for you." The following song, "Gugma Ko," uses the melody of Neil Diamond's '60s hit "Song Sung Blue" over new lyrics in the Visayan dialect, which tell about a man offering love to a girl during courtship. "Hain Nang Panumpa Mo" (Where Is Your Promise) tells of another love affair that left a man with a broken heart. Most of the songs are performed in a mournful minor key and have a mournful tone in both the melody and lyrics. The opening melody of the slow-paced "Mahimong Biyaan Mo Ako," for example, sounds as though it belongs at a funeral, but is about a love that went wrong. "Ika-Duhang Bathala" (The Second God) is a pretty, tender song. "Tuba" (Wine) isn't about love but is about wine that some people are enjoying. The song uses a folkish, polka-like rhythm that has an appealing quality. This album is very different for Victor Wood, who often performs remakes of American songs, but the difference is very much appreciated.

IV. Personal reaction of the topic

He is a good singer and even before he became a singer, he was an actor first.

APRIL "BOY" REGINO

I. INTRODUCTION

April "Boy" Regino (born Dennis Regino Magloyuan Magdaraog on April 9, 1969) is a recording artist from the Philippines who popularized some of the novelty songs "Paano Ang Puso Ko", "Umiiyak Ang Puso" and "Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin" during the 1990s and is known for his trademark caps.

He is the oldest of three brothers, all musicians. His brothers, Vingo and Jimmy, are members of the novelty group April Boys. They were all born in Marikina City but traces their roots from Sawang Capul Northern Samar.

He migrated to the United States and is now based there as an entertainer to the Filipino-American community. More recently he was a contract recording artist with Viva Records. He also did a Tagalog and English cover version of the song いとしのエリー(Itoshi no Ellie) renaming it "Honey My Love So Sweet".

In 2015 after a year off, Regino returned to music with his brand-new album and a new music company, GMA Records.

In 2014, April Boy quit show business after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He revealed in an interview in Star talk that he is "cancer-free", yet he suffered from a heart ailment afterward.

In 2015, Regino was diagnosed with Diabetic retinopathy which caused him to lose his sight in his left eye.

MUSIC CAREER

The Philippine music industry has one of the biggest collections of stars, and it can’t be denied that many OPM superstars contributed greatly to Filipino pop culture and more. To kick off the very fresh month of April, One Music PH gives you five of April Boy Regino’s greatest hits in honor of the iconic Filipino artist.

1. Kahapong Nagdaan

There’s no better way to start off this list than talking about a song that deals with memories. “Kahapong Nagdaan” is about someone who wants to forget and overcome a painful romantic relationship. Many people can relate to the lyrics very well, at least those who are heartbroken anyway. When this song was released late in the 90’s, April Boy had already established a cult following.

2. Umiiyak ang Puso

This song has such an intense emotion of sadness and longing. Despite being a tear fest of a song, the lyrics and melody are very catchy, and that is why this song was such a great hit when it was released. Back in the 90’s (even until today), it is not unusual for you to hear someone singing this song even in public places.

3. Esperanza

Not only was this song famous because it was performed by April Boy, it was also used as the soundtrack in the hit “teleserye” “Esperanza” starred by Judy Ann Santos. There’s no further explanation needed as to why this song is already tattooed on the minds of Filipinos.

4. Ye Ye Vonnel

Among April Boy’s famous songs, this is one of the most recent hits. It was released just a little over a decade ago, but it’s a significant song because this is the first dance song produced by the legendary Filipino artist. Although it’s not a big of a hit like the other songs on this list, it’s still quite memorable.

5. ‘Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin

If you don’t know this song, you’re probably not a Filipino. This song has April Boy written all over it. Not only is “’Di Ko Kayang Tanggapin” a huge hit, it produced a pose that is now trademark April Boy. This song is so famous that some of the lines from the lyrics are used even if music is not the topic of a discussion.

II. Positive and Negative Implication to Philippine Popular Culture

Positive Implications

The messages of his music are somewhat motivational for me, it makes the listeners related to the music because some of it are really based on real life experiences. The variety of musical forms, styles, and traditions that exist mirror the rich diversity in Filipino culture. Since music is valuable, our cultural heritage has become rich, colorful, and vibrant just like the one who created it. Soundtrack album built into our life where there's music for every occasion or emotion.

Negative Implications

Honestly, I don't see any negative implications on all of the songs of April Boy. Maybe, it can be the broken songs that he made since not all the listeners have the same way in absorbing the messages of the music. Also, since music changes our mood, to people who are not capable of holding their emotions it might cause them to remember all their sad experiences through his music.

III. Relationship of The Topic to The Present Scenario of Philippine Popular Culture

Music created by a singer is inextricably linked with the context in which it is produced, consumed and taught and the inter-relationship between music, society and culture. This music, for example, can be a core feature of social celebrations such as weddings to a means of cultural expression and maintenance through ceremony. It is this meaning that can alter across contexts and therefore reflected in the ways music and sound is manipulated or constructed to form larger works with different purposes. Whether to entertain or play a crucial role in ceremonial rituals music practices cannot be separated from the environment in which it exists.

Singing emerges in infancy and develops through processes of enculturation and socialization. When we sing songs from diverse cultures, we are granted with opportunities to learn about the cultures of others and gain a better understanding of our own. Thus, singing songs from different cultures may play important roles in the construction of our identities and in how we perceive and understand others, and ultimately ourselves. Cultural understanding, however, is complex in nature and multi-layered.

April "Boy" Regino being a singer and a composer, he is the carriers of influence, whether he was aware of it and whether he intends to be. The sound and messages he releases through our art form directly impact us as listeners in powerful ways. This is especially true of the youth and adolescents of our society, who are still extremely malleable to the world around them.

IV. Personal Reaction

I believe that those who really love and care about music are the ones who grew up listening to songs that touched them and spoke to them in a profound way. When I was a child, I always heard some of the songs of April "Boy" Regino because of my parents. They are the ones who impacted me to play and be familiar with his songs that until now I still know some of it even if I'm not born in that year when it was released. The popular music of our day reflects the culture of our day. We can see the fingerprints of a certain generation in the lyrics and sound of that time. And in this present age, culture is changing far more frequently than ever before, reflecting styles of music that are evolving and birthed just as rapidly. Music of April "Boy" Regino also have an emotional impact not only to me but also to the other people who listened it. This is probably the most identifiable and direct impact music has on people in society. It makes us feel a certain way. Music sets moods and creates atmospheres. And as humans, we're so behaviorally influenced by the way we feel. Music has the potential to change a mood, to shift an atmosphere, and to encourage a different behavior. So, in short, music has the power to culturally, morally, and emotionally influence our society.

II.            Positive & Negative Implications to Philippine popular culture

Eraserheads: the voice of a Filipino generation

In the span of their 14 year career(1989-2003), Eraserheads produced nine groundbreaking albums that sold more than a million copies, turned out more than 24 chart-topping singles and won every industry award imaginable - including the MTV Asia Viewer's Choice Award in 1997, making them the first Filipinos to receive the coveted Moon Man trophy.

The band's songs, usually written with colloquial lyrics, are noted for being unconventional and poetic at the same time, and usually tackled adolescent themes of campus life, unreciprocated love, friendships, vices and mundane subjects. These songs also tended to cause controversies, with alleged tongue-in-cheek references to sex and drugs such as Maling Akala and Alapaap, or others downright swearing such as Pare Ko.

III.            Relationship of The Topic to The Present Scenario of Philippine Popular Culture

Emergence of Pinoy Bands in the '90s - Eraserheads, Rivermaya, Siakol, Grin Department, The Youth and Parokya ni Edgar, and solo artists such as Yano shaped Filipino pop culture, and were the pioneers of "Tunog-Kalye" genre.

The early to mid-1990s saw the emergence of a superstar pop-rock group, the Eraserheads, considered by many nationals as a turning-point in the OPM music scene.

In the wake of their success was the emergence of a string of influential bands such as Yano, Siakol, Parokya ni Edgar, Grin Department, Rivermaya, Moonstar 88 and Hungry Young Poets, each of which mixes the influence of a variety of pop and rock subgenres into their style.

Filipino rock continues to flourish in the present with new bands such as Hale, Cueshe, Sponge Cola, Chicosci, Kamikazee and Urbandub, and the emergence of the country's first virtual band, Mistula. Though only some of the spearheading bands are still fully intact, many old members have formed new bands such as Pupil, Sandwich and Bamboo. A few band members such as Kitchie Nadal, Barbie Almalbis and Rico Blanco have established steady solo careers.

 IV.            Personal Reaction

Eraserheads was a Filipino rock band formed in 1989, this band became one of the most successful, most influential, critically acclaimed, and significant bands in the history of Philippine music, leaving a legacy that made them the most commercially successful Filipino music artist of all time. Their diverse music worked both in the underground and mainstream scenes of the Philippine music industry. By fusing different musical styles such as alternative, pop, rock, reggae, and synthpop, Eraserheads helped change the sound of Pinoy rock.

VIVA HOT BABES

I.          Introduction

The Viva Hot Babes are a Filipino pop girl group composed of actresses and models, founded in Manila by producer Vicente "Vic" del Rosario, Jr. in 2003. They were mainly spearheaded by actresses Maui Taylor, Katya Santos and Andrea del Rosario. The girls released softcore movies all under Viva Films, as well as a full-length album containing songs with double entendre and highly controversial meanings. The group rose to fame after the release of Hot stuff and Hot stuff 2 pornographic magazines, which created a stir in the early 2000s. Their debut single "Bulaklak" was one of the most controversial and critically panned songs of the 2000s, due to its double entendre and underlying sex themes.

II.        Positive and Negative Implication in Philippine Popular Culture

Positive Implication

Viva Hot Babes rose to fame after they were launched in the 2003 edition of FHM, the newest men’s magazine then, and was officially introduced as “Viva Hot Babes” to the public after they were featured in the controversial magazine, Hot stuff. It was reported that in only four weeks, 765,000 copies of Hot stuff were sold. Viva had to reprint 4,000,000 more copies for the rest of the year. That catapulted their careers and earned them the moniker “Pantasya ng bayan” (Everyone’s fantasy). Their critically berated debut single “Bulaklak” propelled them to stardom because of the naughty lyrics’ with sexual undertones. Composed by the famous novelty songwriter Lito Camo, Bulaklak was almost banned but it worked to their advantage. Soon, their other hits like “Basketbol”, “Batuta ng Pulis” and “Sayaw Kikay” dominated the airwaves while fiestas and Christmas parties blasted their playlists during parlor games. Viva even produced karaoke videos, featuring these Hot Babes.

Other than the theatrical releases of movies featuring many of the girls, the Hot Babes also released softcore home videos. The highly buzzed Viva Hot Babes: Videoke three-volume karaoke home video was released to huge commercial reception.

Negative Implication

Music is one of our most enduring forms of culture. It was, in classical times, considered a critical component of education. It has been a foundation for thousands of years and it remains a curricular staple in education today. studies have found correlations between advertisements and exposure to unrealistic beauty standards in relation to higher amount of eating disorders and lower self-esteem in women, and especially in adolescent girls. This are the effects of high amounts of media exposure, measured in time and quantity, as well as voluntary and involuntary media consumption. It examined how the influence the media on adolescents is greater now than it ever has been before, due to a variety of factors, such as more advances in technology, advertising, societal pressures on adolescents, and general increase in the amount of media teens access. It also looks at the other variables and influences that girls must face in addition to the media. This is strongly reinforced on multiple levels by the 6 media and advertisers, who encourage girls to stand out and get noticed based on their looks, and not on their intelligence or personalities

III.       Relation of the topic to the present scenario of the Philippine Pop Culture

Popular music effects the moods in examples such as: fast paced techno exciting the actions of teens in parties or slowed down rock mellowing out its listeners. Common slang, when used in popular songs, slip into the vocabulary of teenagers. Popular phrases such as "Yay-yeah" and "Crunk" are now used by teenagers in everyday conversations.Viva Hotbabes’ “Bulaklak” and Masculados’ “Jumbo Hotdog” became Christmas party anthems. Your “Stop Dance Game” and “Trip to Jerusalem” wouldn’t be complete without blasting these songs through your speakers! Arguably, the late ‘90s to early 2000s were filled with lots of good music—thanks to our singers or artists who made this era nostalgic, unforgettable, and of course, crazy.

IV.       Personal Reaction

My personal reaction is viva hot babes has really unique presence because in their songs and music video are all sensual that caught the attention of most of their audience. Their provocative and double meaning lyrics appeals to the young and adult men. Not only they appeal to men but they also appeal to young women because of their appearances, viva hot babes members are all beautiful and sexy women that why they are idolized by both men and women.  Despite of their double meaning song, their songs are popular and catchy are most likely used in parties because of their upbeat music.

II.        Positive and Negative Implications to Philippine Popular Culture

Positive Implications

The strong and fast beats of rock music energize teens and make them livelier. This aspect enhances the learning environment when integrated selectively. For me, rock music is useful in welcoming students, setting a learning rhythm and creating musical awareness.

Also, Improves mood. Studies show that listening to music can benefit overall well-being, help regulate emotions, and create happiness and relaxation in everyday life.

Negative Implications

For me, the negative implications of this genre of music is the effects of music on reckless behavior. The study found that adolescents who liked hard rock showed a higher level of reckless behavior, such as drug use, unprotected sex, casual sex, drunk driving, speeding and vandalism.

III.       Relationship of the Topic to the Present Scenario of Philippine Popular Culture

The relationship of this topic to the present scenario of Philippines Popular Culture. Is the popularity and worldwide scope of rock music resulted in a powerful impact on society. Rock and roll influenced daily life, fashion, attitudes and language in a way few other social developments have equaled. As the original generations of rock and roll fans matured, the music became an accepted and deeply interwoven thread in popular culture.

IV.       Personal Reaction on the Topic

My personal reaction about this topic is that musicians are known to express themselves through song and melody to convey how they're feeling in life, which allows listeners to relate and find comfort in the music. Music is an expressive language of culture. It often tells a story, expresses emotion, or shares ideas with a society. Music reflects the cultural characteristics of a society. Some people consider music as a way to escape from the pain of life. It gives you relief and allows you to reduce the stress.

ANG MUSIC INDUSTRY

I.          Introduction

-The Music Industry is a general term for all the parties involved in the creation, performance, recording, promotion, and managing the profitable business of music. The distinction of calling this network of business partnerships ''the music industry'' as opposed to ''the music business,'' is more based on the stigma associated with the latter term than any technical difference. At one time, when the label of ''the music business'' was frequently used, artists often experienced exploitation from those who made exorbitant profits from their work. Today, numerous organizations exist to protect the rights of musicians, composers, and performers.

Who are the people in the industry?

Creative Professionals (Songwriters and Composers)

Creative professionals are the heart of the music industry. Songwriters envision a piece of music, its feeling, its words, and its meaning. Often, the writer of a song's lyrics and the composer of the musical accompaniment are one in the same, though not always.

Take the writing team of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. For decades, the two created hit songs by combining Bernie's skill of lyrics and Elton's skill of composition. Some performing artists exclusively give life to the compositions of professional songwriters and never record a track of their own. Other times, performing artists may write their own songs or collaborate to give life to something infused with their creative skills.

Performance Professionals

Performance professionals include everyone who make a recording or live performance possible. This includes the main star when there is one, all the supporting musicians and vocalists, and the many staffers managing the non-performing details.

Starring Performers

When most of us think of the music industry, we think of the starting performers who sing or play instruments to create the music that moves us. For solo artists, like Celine Dion, the star is a single person. For bands or other groups, like The Rolling Stones, the starring performers are the key, permanent members of the band.

Support Performers

Supporting performers are vocalists and musicians who provide additional musical support for the starring performers. They provide the musical accompaniment to solo artists and sing backup vocals but are not billed as the main attraction. Often, especially during touring performances, these musicians may perform only a number of shows while other musicians take their place at others.

Support Staff

The support staff in this category includes every person that sets up equipment or handles details necessary to create a successful recording session or live performance. They might design or install concert lighting for elaborate shows, care for and test instruments, haul around heavy equipment, or mix recordings to produce a complete track.

Business Professionals

Business professionals include everyone who handles the money and deals. While accountants and attorneys are involved in this part of the industry, they are not usually included, as their profession extends to working with many other industries as well. The key business professionals include publishers, producers, and managers.

Producers

Producers bring all the elements of crafting a musical recording or live performance together. They scout new artists or contract existing stars, select the songs from a publisher's catalog that best fits the artist's abilities, select and manage the supporting musicians and technical staff, create contracts and project budgets to present to the record companies, and are personally responsible for project completion and delivery.

-The Philippine Association of the Record Industry (Filipino: Kapisanan ng Industriya ng Plaka ng Pilipinas, abbreviated as PARI) is a non-profit and private trade organization, that represents the recording industry distributors in the Philippines.

In 1990, the association began certifying recorded music in the Philippines. Constant Change by Jose Mari Chan was the first ever album to be certified. It was certified diamond on November 10, 1990. Since the awards program was launched, only eight albums were certified diamond by PARI. Aside from Constant Change, the other seven are:

• Christmas in Our Hearts by Jose Mari Chan

• Nina Live! by Nina

• A Wonderful Christmas by Christian Bautista

• Araw Oras Tagpuan by Sponge Cola

• Doo-Wops & Hooligans by Bruno Mars

• Julie Anne San Jose by Julie Anne San Jose

• Wish I May by Alden Richards

Other than certifying albums, the organization also certifies singles and music videos. On January 16, 2013, the first ever single was certified. It was "I'll Be There" by Julie Anne San Jose and it was certified quadruple platinum during that time. On the other hand, no music videos are certified yet. The members of Philippine Association of the Record Industry are divided into two: corporate and associate. The corporate members are the major record companies while the associate members are the small, independent record companies

Filipino pop music, otherwise known as Original Pilipino Music or OPM, refers broadly to the pop music that first emerged in the Philippines in the early ’70s and has since come to dominate radio airplay and karaoke playlists in the Filipino market and beyond.

OPM encompasses many sounds and styles, including the vintage disco of the pioneering VST & Company but also the swooning songs of Sarah Geronimo, the indie pop-rock of IV of Spades (pictured), and the alternative rock of rising stars December Avenue. Most of all, though, OPM is associated with a breezy, sentimental ballad form that inspires everyone to join in.

II.        Positive and Negative Implications to Philippine Popular Culture

·     3.  There’s a collaboration between different type of music like pop rock, Reggae, and many more.

Negative Implications

·        1.  There’s a sexual content most of the time.

·        2.  Some lyrics of a song have foul words.

·       3.   Some song used in Political Use.

III.       Relationship of the topic to the present scenario of Philippine Popular Culture

The relationship of it is near because our music industry is part of our Philippine culture. The music industry we have right know is came from our fellow Filipinos whose contribution is great future right now. As you can see the music industry now here in Philippines is full of excitement because we can collab from other artist in other country and make music. They have trust on us in terms of making music, they all know that Filipinos is hardworking in making a music and there’s commitment to their work. And now the music here is part of our life like the songs made now from this generations is based on what happening in the present. Most likely the songs made is related on Love, Heartache and Lessons in life. So many Filipinos love it and embrace of it. These are the successful artist and bands now that catch the people’s heart of the Filipinos now:

1. Moira

2. Ben and Ben

3. The Juans

4. Magnus Haven

5. December Avenue

They are the ones that catch the people’s heart right now in these generations and they have a big impact to the culture because of there music made. Some of it becomes a trend here and to other country. But don’t forget behind those that I cite artist and bands. Most of our great songwriter like Rey Valera, Freddie Aguilar, Jose Marie Chan etc. have a great distribution in terms of development of our music industry. Each of them has a song that is popular here and international country, like Freddie Aguilar the Legendary song that he made is “ANAK” he got multi-platinum award on these. Hugot is Life in terms of music here in our country

Hugot pertains to the practice of coming up with the sad lines out of the mundane. It’s commonly drawn from heartbreaks. Other than failed relationships, hugots are also drawn from bitter experiences with adulting and work.

Memes spurred the trend, helping the latter achieve its optimal effect by giving context and illustration. Tagalog (major language in the capital) is often used but also comes with a mix of English or other dialects.

Philippine music industry professionals discuss the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic

Artists, labels, and productions have turned to holding virtual shows in place of the live concert experience to keep the scene running during the lockdown. They turned to Facebook Live and Zoom to play gigs. Even songwriting and recording sessions at the studio were out of the question—everyone was forced to write and record new material separately. This is the "new normal." But that only covers one part of the industry.

IV.       Personal Reaction on the Topic

All I know on music that it is based on reality and the story there is what happening to you. The music industry I know is the bands, songwriter, composer and producer. But when I research the topic it is broad. It explained that it is involved in the creation, performance, recording, promotion, and managing the profitable business of music it says also that it is part of business. It explains the back story behind the famous bands and song writer who contributes the music industry. It tells the happening now during this pandemic is still there a continuous work on music industry. Some workers said that some of them continuing the project that they have assign to them using social media like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, zoom etc. they make online concert on that social media.  According to music industry professional TOTI DALMACION, TERNO RECORDINGS - Terno Recordings is an independent Filipino record label and home to the likes of UDD, AOUI, Giniling Festival, Lenses, and more. It has affected the industry tremendously as music is about experience, both personal as well as communal and until there is a vaccine,  I don’t think people will risk being in a crowded room like in bars or concert venues which was the norm then in as far as entertainment and way of supporting your favorite artists. Some questions ask to him about how they cope up on this pandemic, he said t’s hard to release something physical like a record given the situation. It seems wrong timing to get people to spend on your release when they might have to use it for essentials. It’s kind of awkward although saying that, International acts have released records during the past two months so it can be also a matter of perspective and survival.  As for digital releases, it’s easier, all the more if you just want people to be aware. I mean you can release any time you want. Most people are at home, so you do get some attention, short as it. maybe because they also have other things, they distract themselves with. So, it can be temporary and fleeting but with hundreds of artists releasing every day all over the world in the same streaming sites as you are, it’s difficult to make people notice so it’s not really a new problem.
